European Lead Factory partnership leads to ground-breaking new antibiotic research findings
New research, based on the results and improved hit compounds delivered by the European Lead Factory (ELF), has led to the discovery of a new class of drug that has the potential to reverse antibiotic resistance for conditions such as pneumonia and sepsis.
The research, published just yesterday (13 December 2021) in Nature Chemistry, is the culmination of work initiated in 2016, when scientists from the University of Oxford aligned with the ELF to screen their target against approximately 340,000 compounds in the ELF collection.
Commenting on the study, Dr Jon de Vlieger, coordinator of the ELF program at Lygature said: “Developments like this demonstrate that public-private partnerships like the European Lead Factory can make a real difference and deliver results in key research areas like antimicrobial resistance. Our collaboration with the Oxford team resulted in highly potent and selective compounds and I'm delighted to see the research progress to this stage.”
